HENRI ANDRE MARTIN, 1918 – 2004 (b. Lyon, France)
When Henri-Andre Martin first began painting in France, he was exposed to the work of the contemporary Modernist Masters, Picasso, Matisse – whose work influenced his own. Post-Impressionism, one of the most important movements in painting of the 20th Century, is a style that is evidence in the work of Martin. This movement urged artists to develop a different kind of brushstroke, namely the thick and unblended brushstroke which gives the viewer an impression of an image from a distance and layered, distinct brushstrokes from up close.
Martin’s first solo exhibition was in the Galerie Chardin in Paris where he showed originality and style of his own.
